☆☆☆☆ Success Charm for the New Year ☆☆☆☆

my favorite ornament on my tree (of course!)
Even though I’ve been studying spells, charms and the magic of nature for decades, I still consider myself a novice. I don’t like complicated spells or charms that use ingredients that I don’t know well , have on hand, or can easily get. So the spells and charms I have in the Spell Book in my shoppe are all fairly simple and easy. This charm below is fairly simple as well and quite fun! It is from one of my favorite books,
“Yule: A Celebration of Light and Warmth” by Dorothy Morrison
Good luck!

Charm for Success in All Things
You will need:
6 inch square of yellow fabric
1 teaspoon dried chamomile
1 penny
1 teaspoon dried lavender
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 sprig mistletoe
a hair from each person living in your home
12 inch yellow ribbon
white candle
Frankincense incense

Place the fabric square on the altar, then light the incense and candle. Lay the penny in the center of the square and place the mistletoe on top; then say something like

A penny for luck so money can grow
With good fortune and power from this mistletoe

Add the hair clippings. Visualize each person in your home as you add their offering. See them becoming successful in reaching their goals and dreams. As you add each offering, say something like :

I add (persons name) to this charm to ensure his / her success
in dreams and endeavors and true happiness

Then sprinkle the dried herbs on top while chanting:

oh, herbs now protect and invoke what we need
fertilize our success- let it bloom and seed

Gather the corners of the fabric together to make a pouch and secure it with the ribbon. Watch the candle flame for a few moments while you visualize the rays of the sun pouring down everyone in your household. Then ask the sun to bless your home and all who live there by saying something like this:

Fire of Sun with light so warm,
with the good fortune our lives now charm,
open possibilities and windows of opportunity
fill our environment with new success and with positive energy,
this home please bless

Let the candle burn all the way down, then hang the charm over the front door. Replace it the following year and toss the old charm in the Yule fire.

Warm Winter Wishes on this Winter Solstice Day

Warm Winter Wishes on this lovely
❤ Winter Solstice Day ❤

Today is the day that I love to clean, organize and prepare for the cold winter months ahead. Tucking away the light summer comforters and bringing the warm down duvets out, organizing files, getting ready for the new year, new ideas, and new adventures ❤

Sewing the signatures to an Antiques Spell Book

It's been a crazy busy season in my studio. Lots of orders, especially custom orders, and I had such a great time making each one.
A custom book mixing mermaids and a nautical theme

I especially love making my antiqued books. Each one is so special to me

Taking a break in my studio with some hot green tea

But as Christmas Day approaches, usually around the Winter Solstice, things slow down in the studio and I can spend time with family and friends, shopping, wrapping gifts and baking with my kids.
Nothing is better than a cup of hot chocolate on a cold night

The beautiful birch tree in front of our home ♥

Birch: For New Beginnings

If  you have a birch tree near your home or can find a birch candle at a shop (World Market has some lovely ones!) get some for the a Winter Solstice wish! Birch is perfect when you are involved with new beginnings and fresh starts and because the tree is sacred to the Earth Mother, it is said that she takes a personal interest in every request made beneath its branches. I love to take the fallen birch branches from the birch tree outside my studio window and make a small wreath by simply twisting the thin branches around each other. Make sure to only use fallen birch branches, as it is considered bad luck to break the branches from a birch tree. Sometimes I add a white winter flower to the top of the wreath or some other winter bloom. Once you’ve made your wreath you can make your wish! When making a wish under your birch wreath you must mention the Earth Mother’s name which will summon her help in any matter. I usually hang my wreath outside my studio door or by my nightstand, and I also make two for my boys to hang beside their beds.

☆☆ Happy Winter Solstice ☆☆

About Me

My photo
I grew up on the beach in Malibu, California and began traveling to Europe at a young age. Although my heart belongs to the sea and life at the beach, I loved the history and old-world feeling of Paris and London compared to my sunshine filled beach life at home. I often found myself searching through antique stores and vintage shops during my travels in Europe. Dusty leather bound books, prints, vintage handbags, and old apothecary bottles were my favorite things to collect. After attending colleges in California, Hawaii and England I graduated with a degree in illustration and I planned to become a children's book illustrator, but then I took a course on bookmaking and letterpress at Otis College of Design in Los Angeles and I began making my own books. As my handmade book collection grew I decided I really wanted to recreate more of the beautiful antique books and other things I remember finding in the little shops in Europe and that's when WANDERING MERMAID was born. I like to think of my ETSY shop as the mysterious little vintage shop you find down a hidden alleyway . You never know what you will find ❤
